Music and singing is next to the highest priority in the
worship service, second only to the preaching of God’s Word.

These words of Martin Luther hold true at Our Savior. God has provided wonderful pastors and musicians since the congregation first met in October of 1941. Those who have entered this house of worship in these 65 years have been blessed through the spoken Word and the rich tradition of music resounding to His glory.

THE ORGAN

On Ascension Day, May 25, 2006, the congregation gathered for the formal dedication of a new Rodgers-Ruffatti Combination Digital/Pipe Organ.   The console and digital part of the instrument arrived in July, 2005, and the 16 ranks of pipes arrived in January, 2006

Sixteen beautiful copper façade pipes adorn each side of the chancel. The sound has been described as generous, authentic, convincing, rich and full.

THE ORGANIST AND CHOIR

Mr. Alvin D. (Ted) Gustin has been organist and choirmaster at Our Savior since August, 2005. With the exception of June, July and August, the Adult Voice Choir sings for Sunday services and mid-week services during Advent and Lent, and for special events as scheduled.   Rehearsals are held on Thursdays, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.. Those wishing to join the adult choir should contact Mr. Gustin.

Alvin (Ted) Gustin is a native of  Dayton, Ohio. Prior to coming to Our Savior, he was the organist-choirmaster at historic Christ Church (Episcopal), Alexandria, Virginia, serving there for thirty-seven years. He also serves as the organist at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, Alexandria, where he is beginning his thirty-eighth year.  Mr. Gustin graduated from the Cincinnati  College-Conservatory of Music and the University of Cincinnati with degrees in  Music Education  and  organ  performance. His organ teacher  was  the late  Wayne Fisher  and his piano study was with John Quincy Bass, former  pianist  with the  Cincinnati  Symphony Orchestra. He has given recitals in Ohio, Connecticut, Washington, D. C. and New York City.   In 1964-65, Mr. Gustin taught music in Ponus Ridge Middle School, Norwalk, Connecticut, and was an organ student with Rodney Hansen.  Mr. Gustin was a fellowship recipient and  received  a  Masters  Degree  in  Church  Music  from  the  College of Church Musicians,  Washington National Cathedral from 1965-67 where  he  studied with Dr. Leo Sowerby,  Dr. Paul  Callaway and Dr.  Preston  Rockholt.
THE BELL CHOIR

Mr. Robert Powers directs an 8-octave handbell choir.  Rehearsals are held each Wednesday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm during the months of September through May.

MUSIC FOR THE CHILDREN

BASIC, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, is the children’s choir of Our Savior Lutheran School. Under the direction of Mrs. Viva Sterner, BASIC is an auditioned group of students in grades 4-6, that rehearse Thursday afternoons for 30 minutes.  BASIC performs at the school’s Fall carnival, Wednesday chapel services, the Christmas program, special assemblies, 8th grade graduation and they hold an annual Spring Concert in May.
